Week 1: Course Prep
This page has everything you need to do to prepare for class. Ideally, you should do all these things before the first day of class.
First, register for the following:
- Slack: a link to sign up for the course slack page can be found on the only announcement on Blackboard.
- Install the Slack app on your phone and Turn notifications on!
- DataCamp: you must use your @gwu.edu email for this to work (not the @email.gwu.edu address). An invite link can be found in the announcement on Blackboard or in Slack.
- RStudio Cloud: we’ll use this for some in-class activities and quizzes.
Next, install R and RStudio:
- Download and install R.
- Download and install RStudio (Desktop version).
We will always work in RStudio, so be careful to open RStudio and not the default R application that comes with R.

Course prerequisites
Students should have taken Programming for Analytics or have experience with at least one programming language. If you’re not sure whether you have the necessary prerequisite skills, you can try and get up to speed by completing Assignment 0 before classes start. Once classes start, it may be difficult to keep up without this background, and it may be more beneficial to wait and take this course next year after taking Programming for Analytics in the coming Fall.
